IP address

Also called: IPv4 address

A numerical identifier assigned to a device's connection by the network it joins, made of a network portion and a host portion.

Appears in the course and exam description (CED): 3.4.D.23.5.E.7

Why it matters in Unit 3

Firewall rules and logs are written in internet protocol (IP) addresses and ranges, so Unit 3 expects you to read them, such as 192.168.1.0/24.

Example

In 192.168.1.10/24 the network portion is 192.168.1 and the host portion is 10. A /24 range holds 256 addresses.

Learn it properly, with a checkpoint Addresses: MAC, IP, ARP, DNS and ICMP
